Most people know that regular soda packs on the pounds, but what about diet soda? If you believe that diet soda will help with your weight loss goals, think again. If you want to lose weight and get healthy you must not drink any kind of soda. Period.
Most diet soda contains aspartame, a controversial artificial sweetener that’s 200 times sweeter than sugar and responsible for a long list of nasty side effects. Recent studies have shown that diet soda consumption is associated with a fatter waist, increased blood glucose levels, and a potentially greater risk of diabetes.*
Diet soda has a sweet taste and that sweetness causes you to crave other sweet, more calorie-dense foods. Researchers also believe that artificial sweeteners trigger appetite cues, causing you to eat more during the day. And, most diet soda contains some of the horrible food additives that are in regular soda, like artificial dyes and brominated vegetable oil. What the hell is brominated vegetable oil? It’s an emulsifier that gives a cloudy appearance to citrus-flavored soft drinks like Diet Mountain Dew and Diet Faygo Orange. It’s banned in many countries and declared to be a carcinogen in California. Nice, huh?
Ditch all your soda, regular and diet. Instead, drink good old plain water, carbonated mineral water, or unsweetened iced tea. Initially it may be difficult to give up your soda habit, but it will be worth it. Soda companies will need to make money off some other chump, because it’s not going to be you.
